Thoroughbred Retirement, Retraining and Adoption

Thoroughbreds, like people, come in all shapes and sizes, and each has a unique personality. All horses offered for adoption by Tranquility Farm have been rested, restored, and retrained after racing. Some have come to us as babies or broodmares. Whatever their history, each horse’s physical and mental capabilities have been evaluated by veterinarians and trainers before they are offered for adoption.

Most often, a fit and experienced rider, teen to adult, is most successful in schooling a young thoroughbred. Horses do receive some basic training before leaving Tranquility, but they will have much to learn about their new rider’s environment and expectations. Our Thoroughbreds have had few experiences other than the racetrack and horse farm, and they do best with a steady, patient rider in an arena-based program.

Tranquility Farm’s horses are evaluated individually with adoption fees that range from optional donation to low market value, depending on the age and future potential of the horse. A trial period of 30 days is offered with full refund of fees provided the horse is returned in good health and condition. Special consideration is given to non-profit organizations seeking horses for their programs, 4-H and US Pony Club members.
Some horses at Tranquility Farm are pasture sound only, but they have loving personalities and greatly enjoy the friendship of people and other horses. These make wonderful companion horses, babysitters, and pets. There is no adoption fee for providing a home for a pasture pal; all that is required is other equine company, references, and a warm heart.
