Our Mission is to prevent the inhumane slaughter of injured, abused, and unwanted horses. Our goal is to rehabilitate and place these horses in qualified adoptive homes.
New York Horse Rescue Corporation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit horse charity. We primarily rehabilitate and retrain Thoroughbred racehorses. Our goal is to find new homes and careers for these unwanted horses.
The primary New York Horse Rescue facility is located in Manorville, Long Island, New York, on a 50-acre farm owned by Mona Kanciper and Dr. Butler. The Manorville farm houses between 15-20 NYHR horses at any given time. A newly opened facility at nearby Hart’s Cove, East Moriches, is home to an additional eight head. Both facilities usually operate at full capacity.
Every year, New York Horse Rescue helps between 50-100 Thoroughbreds, 100+ PMU foals/horses, and approximately 25 non-Thoroughbreds (Quarter Horses, Appaloosas, Arabs, Standardbreds, etc.) Our adopters are wonderful people who open their homes and hearts to these horses.
New York Horse Rescue relies on donations from the public in order to feed and maintain our horses and save more horses from slaughter. We hope that visitors to our site understand the importance of contributions (which are tax-deductible!). Even small donations help by paying for wormers, hay, farrier work, medicines, and even carrots! Please visit our contribution page and help us with these wonderful and majestic creatures.
New York Horse Rescue has consistently endeavored to educate the public about alternatives to Premarin as an estrogen replacement while saving the lives of PMU (Pregnant Mare’s Urine) foals – the unwanted by-products of the industry, for whom there are simply not enough homes.
As of 2004, Ayerst, has cut nearly 75% of ranchers in the PMU program, but although the demise of the industry is much to be desired, the short-term result will be a glut of Premarin foals falling prey to slaughterhouse buyers. Please help us in the huge effort we anticipate making on behalf of these innocent foals.
